Motorsport Wrap for Monday 21st November 2011

The 2011 V8 Supercars Championship will go down to the final round in Sydney following a frenetic weekend of racing at Sandown.

Rick Kelly took out Saturday’s race in wet conditions, while Jamie Whincup edged closer to the championship title with victory in Sunday’s event. Teammate Craig Lowndes is the only man who can stop him in Sydney.

There was some luck at last for reigning champion James Courtney. Driving a Bridgestone-backed HRT Commodore, Courtney fought his way between the two Jack Daniels Commodores of Rick and Todd Kelly to take second place in Saturday’s wet race.

“The guys did a great job. It has been a tough year so it’s rewarding to come back and get some champagne sprayed on me,” Courtney said.

“It was a tough old day, the conditions were crazy. I had nothing left at the end to play with Rick, I used it all up to catch him. If you had said before the weekend I’d be second I would have been stoked.”

Teammate Garth Tander struggled when his demister stopped working.

“No fun driving at 260 kilometres per hour and not being able to see past the bonnet! It started working at half race distance,” said Tander, who managed to finish eighth.

He improved that result by three places in Sunday’s race, but Courtney went the other way to finish 11th.
The final round of the championship is the Sydney 500 from 2-4 December where Whincup should be able to wrap up his third V8 Supercars crown.
