WHINCUP CLAIMS 2009 V8 SUPERCAR TITLE
Ford's Jamie Whincup officially claimed back-to-back V8 Supercar titles at the inaugural Sydney Telstra 500 held last weekend.
With 300 points on offer in the final round, Whincup needed to finish just one of the weekend's races to clinch the 2009 V8 title. On Saturday the Team Vodafone driver won the championship - his fifth place in the 250km race enough to seal the title.
Whincup's nearest rival for the title - Toll Holden Team's Will Davison - completed a dismal race on Saturday, finishing in 15th place.
After wrapping up the championship, Whincup had a horror run on Sunday, finishing 14th after surviving a crash and slamming into a tyre barrier on lap 38 of the 74-lap race.
Lee Holdsworth, Garth Tander and Rick Kelly were three of Sunday's high profile casualties, with only 14 cars making it to the finish.
Whincup finished the season with 3349 points - 305 points ahead of runner-up Will Davison from Toll Holden Racing Team and 433 points ahead of Davison's teammate Garth Tander.
With his team switching to Commodores next year, Whincup is already focused on a new challenge - winning a championship for both Ford and Holden.
