Motorsport Wrap for Monday 25th July 2011

Australia’s Casey Stoner has strengthened his position at the top of the World Championship standings with a strong win in the US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

Starting on Bridgestone’s slick tyres from second on the grid, the Australian rode a considered race, reeling in Dani Pedrosa for second before setting sights on reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo.

With seven laps still remaining Stoner made a decisive move on Lorenzo, passing him around the outside of turn one at more than 260km/h before going on to win by more than five seconds.

It was Stoner’s fifth victory of the season and the 25-year-old’s 28th MotoGP win of his career.

"At the start of the race I struggled but I was patient," he said.

"Lap by lap it got better and better, towards the end of the race I sat back to see what was going on but as soon as I needed to go I upped the pace and was able to get by them.

“It's really good to come back with a race like this and show everybody we can win."

Earlier in the weekend, both Stoner and Lorenzo broke the existing track record by making the most of Bridgestone’s qualifying rubber.

“I am pleased with the performance of our softer rears – even with such a high track temperature they worked very well over qualifying attack laps at the end of the session and Jorge was 0.17seconds faster than the lap record set by Casey last year,” said Hirohide Hamashima from Bridgestone’s Motorsport Tyre Development Division.

Round 11 of the MotoGP World Championship will be held at Brno in the Czech Republic on August 14th.
