CONSISTENCY MISSING FOR TANDER
The 2011 V8 Supercars championship is hotting up after a great weekend for Craig Lowndes at the Ipswich 300 in Queensland.
The Team Vodafone driver had a perfect weekend, winning all three races to close the gap to teammate and championship leader Jamie Whincup to less than 100 points.
It was a different story for Garth Tander, who endured a tough couple of days at the wheel of his Bridgestone-backed HRT Commodore.
He finished at the rear of the field in both of Saturday’s races after falling victim to two unfortunate incidents. In the first race, he was holding 10th place when a puncture on the last lap pushed him down the order. In the second race, he had climbed from the back of the grid to 14th before being forced into a spin by Jason Bargwanna – again on the last lap of the race.
However, Tander recovered to put in one of the drives of the day on Sunday where he pulled himself from 19th on the grid to an eventual sixth place in race three.
“We haven’t got much good stuff to report! The car was very good in the race. We pitted earlier and got through a lot of cars on strategy but we passed a few on the first lap as well,” Tander said.
“To go from 19th to sixth, you would take that. When we get the car right, it’s fast. We just need to do it consistently.”
The championship now moves to Victoria’s Phillip Island circuit on 16-18th September.
