CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES OVER FOR TANDER
Garth Tander’s hopes of winning the 2011 V8 Supercar Championship officially ended at the weekend’s races at Symmons Plain in Tasmania despite some strong finishes.
Driving a Bridgestone-sponsored HRT Commodore, Tander came home in third place in Saturday’s opening event and followed that with sixth place in Sunday’s race.
However, with Jamie Whincup winning both races, only he or Vodafone Commodore teammate Craig Lowndes can now win the title with just four races left in the season at Sandown and Sydney Olympic Park.
That didn’t detract from Saturday’s podium finish, which Tander described as “like a win”.
“We had some dramas with the car in qualifying so we should have been better than where we were. A few guys made some mistakes in front of us which made it easier, but the car was really good.”
“This is like a win for us because we beat the two guys that we're challenging for third place in the championship – Shane van Gisbergen and Mark Winterbottom,” he said.
