Bridgestone Turanza ER300 Ecopia wins top Auto Bild Recommendation

Eco-tyre test hails importance of maintaining wet safety in the rush for fuel efficiency

In its 2010 test of new generation eco-friendly tyres, Auto Bild has awarded the top ranking "very recommendable" rating to Bridgestone's Turanza ER300 Ecopia tyre. The test of five leading brands was aimed at evaluating fuel-saving performance and comparing it with safety levels, particularly in wet conditions.

Auto Bild awarded its top rating of "very recommendable" to only three brands and singled out the Turanza ER300 Ecopia for its "balanced characteristics in wet and dry, high safety for hydroplaning, good wet braking and low noise while providing satisfactory fuel savings."

The Auto Bild test of tyre size 205/55 R16 was conducted on a Mercedes C Class in the summer of 2010. The procedure measured fuel consumption with a highly-precise in-car meter at speeds of 80, 100 and 130 kph and evaluated tyre performance in straight and corner hydroplaning, handing and braking on wet and dry, noise and rolling resistance.

Risks of sacrificing safety for fuel savings

The Auto Bild report, published on 6 August 2010, cautions readers that the flip side of fuel savings provided by tyres with low rolling resistance coefficients is a decrease in handling safety, especially wet grip. The article draws attention to new EU regulations in 2012 that will require tyres to be labelled with wet safety data in addition to fuel consumption.

While noting that the absolute difference in rolling resistance of the tested tyres was relatively low, Auto Bild reports that "the two highest fuel savers were only satisfactory, not particularly good, in the wet and needed an extra car length to stop". As the publication states: "in an emergency, every meter of braking distance counts".

Turanza ER300 Ecopia: no compromise on safety

Within a long-term safety and environmental development programme, Bridgestone designed the Turanza ER300 Ecopia tyre to provide significant fuel savings - but only up to a level at which wet safety is not compromised. This has been achieved through new compound filler technology that reduces heat build-up during rotation, leading to improved rolling resistance and lower fuel consumption. All other performance characteristics are maintained, including a high level of wet safety.

Des Collins, Vice President European Communications commented "Bridgestone's philosophy has been to produce tyres with well balanced performance. By coming first in 5 out of 10 of the Auto Bild tests, we are satisfied that we are meeting our goal of safety first and good performance in a wide range of conditions".
